Keith Olbermann remembers a story of talking to his father about sports and civil rights that is quite moving.  I get it that Keith is a big personality and a bit of a diva at times in his career.  Even I don’t actually watch him regularly most of the time (some of the time though).  But he’s got a talent for talking to the camera. … Continue reading Bookmark: Keith Olbermann

I finally got around to watching the first season of Spaced, the British TeeVee series featuring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and directed by Edgar Wright. I have to say, it is really funny.  Perhaps a little too targeted to my life experience in terms of age and pop culture; it makes me wonder how well it will hold up over the years. Haven’t posted a shot of the library in a bit. If you’re looking for a book on Thanksgiving Day a pretty decent selection of young graphic novels (on the right) and fairly random number of fiction/non-fiction on the left. Always a bit curious which books never move and which ones leave but come back. I suppose some of the latter might be getting the strongest endorsement - read it and wanted to share it with others again.
A few new books in the library. A bunch of young adult graphic novels in there still... not sure why no one wants those.
Re-reading a beloved book from childhood is always a bit of a risk that it won’t quite match your memories. Re-reading Lloyd Alexander’s Westmark and it’s sequel The Kestrel has been a delight. Alexander is known for his most popular series The Prydain Chronicles but I far preferred this tale of Mickle and Theo and the kingdom of Westmark. Most amazingly to me is that in those pre-Internet days of yore I missed that Alexander wrote a third book in this series titled The Beggar Queen which having found a used copy of I’m about to read.

What an amazing run to the World Series by the Nats! I’m admittedly a bandwagon fan and watched with some bemusement as the Nats apparently have to get through my childhood-linked teams to win the title — Dodgers (okay Angels were my first team but the Dodgers were in the National league which meant they never played each other), Cardinals (ancestral family hometown) and now Houston which was my hometown for a couple of childhood years and is still the team my parents root for. Still, rooting for DC to win another title this year (after the Mystics victory!) especially since DC United had such a calamitous end to their season last night...
